Standards
Responsibilities to Students
The professional school
counselor:
Keeps information confidential unless is required to
prevent clear and imminent danger to the student or others or when legal
requirements demand that confidential information must be revealed.
(Information regarding contraband on the school campus,
child abuse, suicide, running away, possible transmission of a communicable or
fatal disease, and illegal, dangerous acts must be disclosed to assure the safety and
well-being of all students. Disclosure may include the school principal,
parents, or law enforcement or Children’s Services depending on the
information.)
Responsibilities to the School
The
professional school counselor:
Informs appropriate officials in accordance with school
policy of conditions that may be potentially disruptive or damaging to the
school’s mission, personnel and property while honoring the confidentiality
between the student and counselor.
Responsibilities to Parents/Guardians
The
professional school counselor:
Provides parents/guardians with accurate, comprehensive,
and relevant information in an objective and caring manner, as is appropriate
and consistent with ethical responsibilities to students.
