Course Syllabus:  Spanish I

Instructor: Brenda Epperson

Course Content and Methodology.

            Course content includes the vocabulary and the skills necessary to communicate in the present tense on a conversational level in Spanish. All five language competencies (speaking, listening, reading, writing, and culture) are addressed, and state curriculum guidelines are followed. Daily activities include vocabulary review and exercises; conversation practice; listening to native speakers on audiotape and videotape; singing songs and reciting poems in Spanish; reading stories, novels, and other materials in Spanish; and cultural studies.

            Spanish I is taught in part using the TPRS (Total Physical Response/Storytelling) method in which vocabulary is learned through gestures and stories.

Required Materials.

1.  Three-ring binder with cover labeled: El español  (Sra. Epperson)  and with seven tabbed dividers labeled: Para Empezar, Cultura, Vocabulario, Gramática, Conversación, Leer, Escribir

2.  loose-leaf paper

3.  pen or pencil, scissors, and colored pencils or markers

4.  Textbook: ¡En español! and workbook: Actividades para todos

Grades.

1.  Daily activities, quizzes, homework:              50%  (lowest grade dropped)

2.  Folder:                                                                    15%

3.  Etapa tests:                                                              20%

4.  Participation/Bellringers                                            15%

(Final Test is 15% of your final grade per the student handbook)

Participation.

Participation is assessed daily and includes attendance*, attentiveness, volunteering in class, having required materials, completing assigned work, participation in paired and group activities, and having a cooperative attitude. All students begin with a participation grade of 85 and earn or lose points using the aforementioned criteria.

*Attendance is negatively affected by unexcused absences and tardies and excessive use of bathroom passes.

Make-up Work.

Grades missed from absences must be made up within three days of the student's return to school.

Extra Credit.

1.  Extra credit questions are included on some tests.

2.  Students may retake within 3 days any Etapa test on which they made less than 85 for a maximum of 93 points.

Classroom Rules.

1.  Be in your assigned seat when the tardy (11:50 A. M.) bell rings.

2.  Bring textbook, workbook, binder with paper, pen or pencil, and assignments to class.

3.  Be cooperative and positive.

4.  Be kind/respectful toward others and their property.   

5.  Do your best.

Daily Consequences.

1.  Warning.

2.  One conduct card/ 1 minor

3.  Second conduct card/ 2nd minor and detention.

4.  Third conduct card/3rd minor and second detention.

5.  Fourth card/4th minor and suspension.

Weekly/Quarterly Consequences.

1.  Three to four conduct cards per week earns a detention.  Five conduct cards per week earn two detentions. More than five cards per week earns in school suspension.

2.  Eight to nine cards per quarter (4½ weeks) earns a detention. Ten cards per quarter earn one day of  in-school suspension.  Each card after the 10th per quarter earns an additional day of in-school suspension.

Individual/Class Rewards.

1.  Extra points on participation grades.

2.  One or no conduct cards in a week earns 15 minutes of a movie dubbed/subtitled in Spanish on  Friday.

Automatic Conduct Cards.

1.  Name-calling or any other hurtful comment directed against another student.

2.  Negative or offensive comments about this class.

3.  Touching the thermostat, overhead projector, screen, or automatic screen controls without permission.

4.  Each unexcused tardy after the second and each unexcused absence after the first. (Tardies and absences also affect participation grades.)

5.  Changing your assigned seat.

6.  Leaving the classroom without permission.

7.  Not signing your conduct card (two cards total).

Course Syllabus:  Spanish II
